Why UN Women?

UN Women is a global champion for women and girls, working tirelessly to recognize and realize their rights and opportunities. With a mission to accelerate progress in meeting the needs of women worldwide, UN Women supports member states in setting global standards for gender equality. The organization collaborates with governments, civil society, and other partners to design and implement policies, programs, and services that benefit women and girls, making the vision of the SDGs a reality.
In Bangladesh, UN Women is actively involved in initiatives that empower women, promote equal participation in all aspects of life, and ensure they live free from violence. The organization is also dedicated to building sustainable peace and resilience, particularly in the face of natural disasters and conflicts.

The Role: Communication Officer - Gender Statistics

As a Communication Officer for Gender Statistics, you will be crucial in supporting the implementation of the UN Women’s Flagship Programme Initiative, "Making Every Woman and Girl Count" (Women Count). This initiative aims to radically improve the production, availability, accessibility, and use of quality data and statistics on gender equality and women’s empowerment.

Key Responsibilities:

- Develop and Implement Communication Strategies: You will design and execute communication and advocacy strategies to raise awareness about gender statistics in Bangladesh. This includes conducting needs assessments, monitoring media, and supporting outreach campaigns with key government partners like the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) and the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs.
- Create Advocacy Materials: Your role will involve developing and disseminating advocacy materials, including press releases, briefing documents, and stories from the field. You will work closely with communication specialists to produce engaging audio-visual content highlighting UN Women’s work.
- Manage Media Relations: Building and maintaining relationships with the press will be key to your job. You’ll facilitate interviews, organize press briefings, and ensure that UN Women’s initiatives receive the media coverage they deserve.
- Enhance Online Presence: You’ll oversee the online presence of Women Count in Bangladesh, ensuring that the program's activities are well-represented on the web and across social media platforms.
- Facilitate Knowledge Sharing: You will help organize training sessions and workshops on communication and advocacy, sharing best practices and lessons learned from your work to further the goals of gender equality.

What You’ll Bring

To succeed in this role, you will need at least three years of experience in communications, preferably at the national or regional level. A strong understanding of gender statistics and the SDGs and experience working with government agencies or donors will be invaluable. A Master’s degree in communications studies, economics, development studies, or a related field is required, along with fluency in English and Bengali.
This position is perfect for someone who is adaptable, committed to continuous learning, and can work under pressure while maintaining high standards. If you are a team player with excellent networking skills and a passion for gender equality, this could be the perfect opportunity.

How Auto-Captions Can Make or Break Your Video Translation Experience

Video translation , the process of converting video audio or text into another language, is commonly facilitated through auto-captions, transcribing speech into on-screen subtitles. This feature is invaluable for the deaf and hard-of-hearing, aiding language learners and broadening a video's audience. However, the prevalence of errors in auto-captions, as evidenced by the University of Texas at Austin's finding of a 60% accuracy rate for YouTube's auto-captions, can lead to confusion and, in some cases, unintended humor or offense. For instance, in a TED talk by Facebook's COO, Sheryl Sandberg, auto-captions transformed her name into "surely salmon." In contrast, Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's name became the nonsensical "she might Monday no go see a ditch." While these errors might amuse, they can also misrepresent the identity and culture of speakers, posing potential harm. The question of whether auto-captions are helpful or hu

Germany, with 2 million job vacancies, is currently undergoing reforms to its immigration laws. The objective is to provide simplified visa procedures and fresh avenues for skilled foreign workers to fill these vacant positions in the country. In late June 2023, the German Parliament approved and launched the "Germany Opportunity Card for Job Seekers." This new work visa is designed for non-Europeans and enables them to come to Germany without a pre-arranged job offer for a period of one year.
