Campus Life

Rice’s residential college system forms the heart of campus life. The colleges are small communities where students live, dine, and interact with faculty mentors. Each college is a self-supporting unit with its own government, budget, intramural teams, and faculty advisers. Students are randomly assigned to one of our 11 coed colleges as freshmen and remain affiliated with that college throughout their time at Rice.

Clubs and Organizations

There are no exclusionary social clubs at Rice. All students are welcome and encouraged to participate in more than 200 student organizations, including performance, media, athletic, academic, religious, cultural, and political groups. With this full range of extracurricular options, students can pursue existing passions or expand their horizons by trying something new.

Arts and Events

Outstanding cultural and educational events await you at Rice. Whether you're into theater or politics, or you’re a spectator or performer, we’ve got it. The Shepherd School of Music presents numerous concerts each year, and the student-run Rice Players produce first-rate theatrical productions. If attending a lecture is more your thing, the Baker Institute for Public Policy and the Office of the President bring stimulating speakers on a wide range of topics to campus each year. The calendar of events is an extensive listing of daily events and programs on campus.

Rice Recreation and Fitness

Barbara and David Gibbs Recreation Center

A wide array of recreational programs and services have been created and are offered in an effort to increase knowledge about and provide opportunities for the development of healthy behavior patterns. All are designed to encourage a lifetime of health and wellness for the students, faculty, and staff of Rice University by promoting the physical, social, and emotional benefits of physical activity.

How Auto-Captions Can Make or Break Your Video Translation Experience

Video translation , the process of converting video audio or text into another language, is commonly facilitated through auto-captions, transcribing speech into on-screen subtitles. This feature is invaluable for the deaf and hard-of-hearing, aiding language learners and broadening a video's audience. However, the prevalence of errors in auto-captions, as evidenced by the University of Texas at Austin's finding of a 60% accuracy rate for YouTube's auto-captions, can lead to confusion and, in some cases, unintended humor or offense. For instance, in a TED talk by Facebook's COO, Sheryl Sandberg, auto-captions transformed her name into "surely salmon." In contrast, Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's name became the nonsensical "she might Monday no go see a ditch." While these errors might amuse, they can also misrepresent the identity and culture of speakers, posing potential harm. The question of whether auto-captions are helpful or hu...
